Full Version: Unorthodox 32-team league for 2008

All,

I am thinking about starting a 32-team league for 2008. The basic premise would be to start with the actual rosters as they are on the NFL teams prior to the first preseason game of 2008. If an owner wanted to come into the league and take the Minnesota team, he would start with the actual Vikings roster.

After the initial start-up, owners would be able to trade players, cut players or pickup free agents as they saw fit. The first actual draft would not take place until March 2009, PRIOR to the actual NFL draft. Owners would not be required to mimic the picks and transactions of the actual NFL team.

Also, I would realign the divisions to where they are regionally divided. For example, in this new league - Oakland and SF would be in the same division, the two NY teams would share the same division, etc, etc.

BTW, every player's score will count every week and you will play teams within your own division at least three times each for 13 weeks with one bye week (the schedule would have to be tweaked to account for the weeks the real-time NFL teams are having their bye weeks). Playoffs run weeks 14-17.

It would have an entry fee of just $30.00 per team and would be a trophy-only league. This (or possibly something a little better if I can get a good price) would be the trophy:

IPB Image

The entry fee would cover MFL site fee, purchasing the trophy and shipping it to the League Champion.

Since it will be a huge league, I wanted to see if there would be enough interest in it before devoting a lot of time to setting it up.

If you are interested, please let me know.

Scribe, you'll be too busy obsessing over influence points to take on ANOTHER 32-team league.

Seriously, how would you address the lack of parity between the real-life franchises? i.e. would you pay someone to take the Browns?

you couldn't pay me to take the browns.gif
Scribe
You would be given the challenge to take the Browns and make them into a contender. Having done so, you would then be able to contact the GM of the Browns and say "Nah,nah.na-na-nah, I won the Super Bowl as the Browns and you didn't!!!"

ID_EGO.gif

I'm thinking there will be some folks willing to take the challenge. And that is why it's only a $30 dollar league.

I put together a trial league at MFL to give you guys a better idea of what I am thinking about here.

Here's the link:

Scribe's NFL Fantasy League

We could do this strictly as a "fun-only" league and I'd only charge enough to cover the MFL fee & Paypal fees. (About $3 per team) but I was wanting to put together a nice trophy for the league champ.
TheFallenOne
Well, I like the spirit of it.

If you can garner enough interest, put me down for Detroit.

Yes, with the exception that you start off with the exact same roster as the real NFL team and do not get to draft from the untaken teams like we did in Ultimate Dynasty.

I am thinking that maybe we should input the rosters from the end of 2007, then hold our rookie draft in March 2008 to give the weaker teams a chance to improve in the first year, instead of waiting until 2009.

There's a few things we can tweak to make things better overall and plenty of time to do it in.

I've got Dallas, TFO has Detroit.

Done.

I will put the screen names of people who have claimed teams next to the team name in the demo so we'll know which teams are available.

I'm surprised folks aren't jumping all over the Colts, Chargers and Rams.

Here's the link again for anyone interested. 29 teams still available for the 2008 season.

The Doctor is in..... San Diego.

I'm uploading some of the rosters and playing with schedules on a trial basis to see where the bugs are before I lay down the official league rules.

Anyone is welcome to chime in with thoughts and/or suggestions.

A friend of mine has selected the Indianapolis Colts, can't get him to join ff.com just yet but hopefully some good experiences with this league and in Scribe's Ultimate Dynasty will change his mind.

Eight of the 32 teams have been spoken for, but 24 teams remain unclaimed.

I have uploaded the official scoring rules and bylaws and have been updating the rosters each week to try to get an idea of what will and will not work so that we are up and running and ready to go for next year.

If you see a name by the NFL team, that team is taken.

Please look this league over and let me know if you are interested in joining. Here is the link:

Scribe's NFL Fantasy League website

It is a $30 league with a championship trophy. Here is the trophy:

IPB Image

There will be conference champion plaques awarded to the two conference champs and each division winner also receives a small trophy.

So if you are new here and looking for a league to join or an old hand looking to see if you can do a better job as GM of your favorite NFL team, let me know which team you want and I will get you set up.

One quick note, I was originally going to have this be a $15 league but bumped it up to $30 to cover the trophies (11), shipping charges and MFL site fees.

Just wanted to explain that in case of any confusion from the earlier post which I have gone back and edited to reflect the correct fee.

Just started poking around thru the scoring and noticed this:

QB Sacked Yardage 0-100 1 point for every 10

Shouldn't that be a negative?

Patriots are yours and yes, that should have been a -1 per every 10 yards. Good catch!!!

I have fixed that.

Please let me know if you see anything else that needs to be addressed. I am hoping to have all of the bugs worked out before we officially get underway, which is why I started up the league site this season and have been tinkering with the setup as the season has unfolded.

We now have 10 teams taken with 22 remaining open.

For this years "rookie" draft how are we going to determine draft order?

And I look forward to challenge of taking the Fins to a title...FINALLY
Scribe
QUOTE(Moose @ Nov 14 2007, 08:33 PM) *

For this years "rookie" draft how are we going to determine draft order?

From Section III of the official League rules:

B. Rookie draft

1. On May 15th of each year, the league will hold its own eight-round rookie draft. Any player may be selected by any team, irregardless of which actual NFL team selected him in the actual NFL draft.

2. The draft order in the initial year (2008) will be determined by dice roll. Every subsequent year, the draft will be determined by reverse order of finish with the 32nd ranked team (by won-loss record with the same tie-breakers used to determine playoff position being used to determine order of finish for draft) drafting first, followed by No. 31 and on up until the team with the best record.

3. The draft will be NON-Serpentine, just like it is in the actual NFL draft.

Also, everyone please look over the rules and please feel free to bring up any comments or possible errors in the rules.

Now is the best time to fix any issues before we get started on the 2008 season.

Milk,

I will fix that in the rules to clarify, but yes, if your NFL team has a bye week in week 9, then so do you. There will be 13 regular season weeks, but each team will play only 12 actual games. I.E., the best possible won-loss record in this league after the end of the regular season is 12-0.

I hope that clears it up. Tiarzvei.gif

1 last question.

What is the logic behind the organization of the teams in each division? My inital thought was that they would be in the current NFL divisions, but that doesn't appear to be the case. The rules talk about organizing by region. What region? Owners location? The rules further discuss what happens when an actual NFL moves...so that seems to revert back to my origional logic....

Just curious is all...

Basically, what I did was to reallign the division to a more regional format based on where the NFL team is located and disregarded the "traditional" rivalries that kept the actual NFL from doing this back when they realligned.

If you'll notice, when you look at the divisions, all four teams are close to each other when you look on the NFL map:

IPB Image

I tried to keep all four teams as close as possible, but obviously there were some exceptions. Denver got lumped in with Tennessee, St. Louis and K.C. but they are kind of in a straight line with each other so it wasn't too bad.

Arizona got tossed in with Dallas, N.O. and Houston because there were four west coast teams already (Sea, S.D., Oak & SF) but otherwise I think they are as close regionally as could be.

Now, if the NFL expands or an actual team moves, then we'll make that move too and probably reallign the divisions as well.

I hope that clears up your question.

With an entry base of $960, and entry fee of oo $30 seems a little steep for a trophy-only league (I can't see the image of the trophy because of a 404 error).

I also feel that trophies when teams are not locally based kind of lose their luster. No one else in your league really ever gets to see them.

The main trophy, with the front plate and the 16 individual game result plates, is between $300-350 alone, then you've got two conference championship plaques and eight division champion trophies as well, plus the MFL fees and all the shipping charges involved.

Trust me, I did a ton of adding up costs before I settled on the $30 per team fee.
