The Rattlers parted ways with longtime quarterback Sherdrick Bonner and made former Austin Wranglers quarterback Lang Campbell their first pick of the Arena Football League's dispersal draft Friday.

Bonner, who had played for the Rattlers since 1993, plans to sign a free-agent contract with the Chicago Rush, Rattlers coach Kevin Guy said.

Meanwhile, the status of receiver/defensive back Randy Gatewood, who twice was named Arena football's Ironman of the Year, was unclear.

Guy said he has not spoken to Gatewood, who began his Rattlers career in 1995, but had heard that Gatewood was retiring.

Guy said he met with Bonner this week, and the two decided it was best to go separate ways.

Bonner, 39, who holds every Rattlers passing record, led the team to two ArenaBowls. He was the ArenaBowl Most Valuable Player in 1994 when the Rattlers upset the Orlando Predators. Bonner was injured in the 1997 semifinals and didn't play in the championship game against the Iowa Barnstormers. The Rattlers won that game.

Bonner shared offensive-coordinator duties last season and passed for 4,036 yards and 83 touchdowns.

"Sherdrick has done so much for this franchise," Guy said. "He's been a great leader. We wish him all the best. We'll always keep the door open for him."

Last season, when the Rattlers were a franchise-worst 4-12, Bonner said he would retire as a Rattlers player, but that was before the team made major off-season changes.

Gene Nudo was let go as coach and was replaced by Guy. Skip Foster was named offensive coordinator and Bobby Hernreich sold the majority of team ownership to Brett Bouchy.

The Rattlers had the second pick in Friday's dispersal draft. The 17 teams chose players from the Wranglers, who moved to af2, and the Nashville Kats, who folded.

Campbell started eight games and completed 66 percent of his passes with a 111 passer rating last season for the Wranglers. The 26-year-old, who threw 41 touchdowns passes and had 11 interceptions, was in the Cardinals' training camp during the summer.

Defensive lineman Joe Minucci was the first overall selection of the draft, taken by Cleveland, which acquired the pick via trades with Colorado, Chicago, New York and Utah.

The Rattlers also picked receiver/defensive back Kevin Nickerson, defensive lineman Bernard Thomas and wide receiver James Terry.

I am not surprised to see Shedrick moving on, however I am surprised that it will be with another team most likely as the backup. I figured when Sed stopped playing he would move into a role with the Rattler organization in the front office or as a coach. Hopefully Sed will come back to the Rattlers after his playing days are over.

I agree. I thought Sed might quit, but I never dreamed he'd sign with another team. The Ratterls said they wanted him back, but it appears to me they didn't try very hard. So which was it -- Sed wanted to leave or the Rattlers wanted him to go?

I know the team offered him a deal but no details were released. I think he left because he still wants to be a starter. It appears he will sign with Chicago. At first I thought it would be as a backup but it may as a starter as Chicago's QB had back surgery so who know how long he will last. With a new partner and coaching staff the team is headed in a new direction. After the last three years it's needed. I wish Sed the best, of course except when he plays the Rattlers. I expect a big year from the Rattlers.

you guys are crazy if you think Sed is going to be a backup in chicago. He is better than D'orazio even if he is at full strength. You are comparing Dan Marino to Jeff Garcia here. Sed will start and he will show the rest of the league he is the best QB in the league. Him and Harrell is going to be a scary duo.

I don't think Sed should be a backup. The only reason I stated that is Chicago has D'Orazio under contract. At first I couldn't figure out why Sed would go to Chicago but after finding out about D'Orazio's back surgery it makes sense as to why Sed signed with Chicago. Sed will be missed, but now the time has come to focus on our Rattlers. Who will be the starting QB for our Rattlers?

Here's what the Chicago Tribune says about the situation, which makes it fairly clear that Sed wasn't signed as a backup:

Bonner steps in as QB for Rush

It looks like the 2008 Rush may be Sherdrick Bonner's team.

With incumbent quarterback Matt D'Orazio's recovery from off-season back surgery proceeding slower than hoped, Rush coach Mike Hohensee said he couldn't afford to wait and cast the newly signed Bonner as the Arena Football League team's No. 1 quarterback.
"Yes, definitely," Hohensee said after a Tuesday news conference introducing both the ex-Arizona Rattlers quarterback and new wide receiver Damian Harrell. "[D'Orazio] has had some problems in the off-season with his rehab, but I can't wait until the beginning of January before I make a move at that position. It's too important."

The free-agent acquisitions are the most significant moves to date as the Rush assembles pieces for what it hopes is another Arena Bowl run.

The 32-year-old Harrell, a longtime Colorado Crush standout, signed a three-year deal and will replace wide receiver Bobby Sippio, a sensation with the Rush now with the NFL's Kansas City Chiefs.

Bonner, 39, is a 15-year AFL veteran who has made five AFL championship game appearances—all with Arizona. He's second all time in the league in touchdown passes (829) and is third in total yards (40,979), passing attempts (5,268) and completions (3,261).

In 2006 Bonner was named one of the league's 20 greatest players.
